How Virtual SIM Cards Can Change Your Digital Life

A virtual SIM card is a built-in device you can program over a network, therefore eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. Back in 2012, I wrote about how SIM cards go away and give place to virtual SIM cards later on.

In 2014, a UK-based company called MoVirtu implemented something that required us a step in that direction. MoVirtu’s virtual SIM card solution lets users operate numerous profiles and lines on exactly the same device without adjusting bodily SIM cards. The business has been acquired by BlackBerry.

Another electronic SIM card tech company named Seamless, also based in 2014, believe that digitizing physical SIM cards is the way forward and is pushing Embedded SIM (eSIM) chips.

Don’t allow the lingo to confuse you. Both iSIM and eSIM are distinct names that each seller has chosen to predict the implementation of their virtual SIM card. They’re equally not physical SIMs.

Benefits Of Virtual SIM Cards

The benefits of virtual SIMs are easy to see. Hardware manufacturers can use the free-up area to install larger batteries or displays or whatever else which needs to be put inside their devices.

Note that lots of new connected devices e.g. Internet of things (IoT) devices, are smaller in size, freeing up space is much more significant.

Also, with virtual SIM cards, subscribers will have the ability to use many lines and profiles in their devices with no need for carrying any bodily SIM card around.

The Dark Past Of Virtual SIM Cards

Virtual or digital SIM cards are not new in the mobile world. If you’ve ever used a CDMA phone and network, you’ve used a virtual SIM. And that’s where we get to watch that the dark past of electronic SIMs. The contributor is at the mercy of the operator.

A bodily SIM card lets you walk into a mobile phone store, purchase a new prepaid cell phone or smartphone, and begin using it immediately without having your carrier or system operator to produce the switch.

It is absolute convenience and is a major attraction of GSM mobile technology.
Anyone who has used a CDMA network understands the pain that is often connected with switching to a new phone. In case your mobile network operator was not quick on customer care, you were stuck.

Going Forward With Digital SIMs

I’ve been an advocate of virtual SIM cards for decades, but for this to be appealing for me and to millions of other cellular subscribers around the Earth, the power to change needs to be in the hands of the consumer.

I liken it to the way I can switch my Gmail account to some new devices without needing to contact Google.

The subscriber needs to be able to get a new phone and login or punch a set of codes to put in his mobile profile to the phone and activate his number immediately, without any flaws or resort to a third party.

In conclusion, it plays out, that digital SIM cards are here and won’t be going away again. Kindly share this post.
